Islamophobia has been on the increase in Australia over the last few decades. The Muslim community has sat patiently, waiting for our elected representatives to step up and advocate for us time and time again.

Who came to our defence when false allegations were made against Halal certification? Who came to our defence when Islamophobes protested against the opening of our places of worship? Who came to our defence when we were left reeling in the aftermath of the Christchurch massacre?

The 2023-24 War on Palestine marked a turning point for our community and the catalyst for the establishment of Muslim Votes Matter. As 30,000+ innocent Palestinian civilians are massacred (mostly women and children), our community’s elected MPs and Senators showed us how little they cared about our opinion. Not enough to call for an unconditional ceasefire. Not enough to unequivocally condemn war crimes. Not enough to call-out blatantly one-sided reporting from the national broadcasters we fund.

Australian Muslims have had enough. We will no longer be ignored or taken for granted. We will no longer tolerate bias and veiled racism. Our political future is in our hands. It’s time to exercise the Muslim vote.

Muslim Vote Matters is a collective of politically-engaged Australian Muslims working in the best interests of our community. We have four primary goals:

• Conduct surveys and report on the political priorities and primary concerns of Australian Muslims.

02: Informed Voting

• Nationally distribute comprehensive voting guidance and scorecards for MPs and Senators in key electorates.

03: Mobilisation

• Actively engage with the community through outreach efforts to secure our political future.

04: Fight Islamophobia

• Expose Islamophobia and intolerance in politics through monitoring, documentation and reporting.

No, Muslim Votes Matters will cover the stance taken by our elected representatives on a broad range of issues – in particular those which resonate most with the Australian Muslim community.

Muslim Votes Matter will continue to highlight the most pertinent issue the Australian Muslim community faces at any given time – currently being Australia’s foreign policy response to the growing atrocities in Gaza.

No, a more engaged Muslim voter base benefits all Australians, and in particular those from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds.

An informed Muslim voter base means a more egalitarian society where every Australian gets a “fair go”, regardless of their economic, social or religious background. It means an Australia with a more ethical and justice-based foreign policy.
